Sadly, many of us are so uncomfortable when giving personal accolades about ourselves that when asked to tell a little bit about ourselves we go right into all the things we do instead of saying anything about who we are. We are repeatedly told that we are not what we “Do” we need to know more about our “Who”.
It is easier to rattle off all of our skills, education, certifications and what we did well on our former jobs or do well on our present job. It seems tougher to tell others about our talents, personality and the positives about who we are and why we are a personal asset to know and have as a friend or employee.
We, as a general population, have become uncomfortable in talking about ourselves as far as our personal talents and gifts go. We feel like we are bragging about ourselves and to a point we are … and …. that is the point! Several years ago, I was asked on an interview to tell them about myself and I went right into telling them about my skills and education. The person doing the interview said, “while that is good to know, all of that information is on your resume, I want to know who you are personally.” I was at a loss for what to say because I did not want to sound like I was bragging or conceited in anyway. So, I asked for clarification and he said, tell me what your talents are, how you treat others, what you are good at in your free time.
You can give your personal credentials, skills and talents in a way that is not offensive to whoever you are talking to. It is all in the delivery, how confident you are, your comfortability and not going on and on to make it sound like you are the end all of everyone’s world.
A few examples of who you might consider yourself to be:· I am an avid reader and I enjoy reading about self-help, motivational and leadership skills. (fill in the genre you enjoy)· I am a fast learner and enjoy doing research when needed.· I am Optimistic and do my best to stay in a state of happiness and gratitude.· I am resilient, resourceful and always try to keep an open mind.· I am respectful of others knowledge, talents and opinions.· I am very flexible, I work well as a team player, however I can also work on my own. How many of these made you uncomfortable when you read them? How many did you think….”I can’t say that about myself, people would think I am conceited, way too cocky and think too highly of myself”.
You get the point, so sometime this week take a paper and pen or go to your notes on your phone, iPad or computer and make a list of those things you know you are good at, all of your talents and your personal Attributes. This will help you with identifying who you are!
